Newcastle United recently struck up a bond with AFC Wimbledon after the League Two side were hit with massive pitch damage.

The Magpies were due to head to Wimbledon for a Carabao Cup clash but the overnight damage caused the game to be postponed with the fixture ultimately being moved to St James' Park the following week.

In the meantime the Newcastle fans as well as the club itself inundated a Just Giving page with donations to help Wimbledon towards the cost of repairs.

That resulted in the Wimbledon fans unfurling banners thanking Newcastle United at the rearranged game and the Chairman extending an open invitation to Newcastle for a friendly.

Vinnie Jones was given his first acting role at St James' Park

And while AFC Wimbledon is a different entity to the Wimbledon of old, Newcastle already have a fun history with the Dons.

On this day in 1995, Newcastle United found themselves 3-0 up against Wimbledon before they lost their goalkeeper Paul Heald to a red card. Huge thanks to @NUFCThreatLevel on X for pulling this one out of the archives.

Having used all of their substitutions, Wimbledon opted to give midfielder Vinnie Jones his first acting role as he acted like a goalkeeper for the rest of the match. Taking up his position after bowing to the St James' Park crowd.

Vinnie Jones was a Juggernaut between the sticks

Vinnie Jones, while clearly not a goalkeeper, actually put in a good performance despite conceding a further three goals.

Jones pulled off an outstanding double save from David Ginola and Les Ferdinand and actually kept the score down to a reasonable six. The game was gone and the leader of the 'Crazy Gang' was having fun.

The Newcastle crowd even cheered and applauded when Jones made saves. Those were the days when football was allowed to be fun.
