We've often said that Newcastle United has a way of getting under the skin of players after they join and becoming a part of them even after they've left the club.

Shay Given, Warren Barton and a whole host of other former players from outside of the region still refer to Newcastle as 'we' when doing pundit work, but imagine how much it must mean to a player who grew up supporting the Toon to wear the black and white stripes.

In the case of Dan Burn it must be extra special as he genuinely believed his chance to play for his boyhood club had gone after being released from the academy. Then when the takeover was approved and all the media was reporting on how Newcastle were going to go wild in the transfer market bringing in the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Burn was sure his chance had gone.

And yet, in Eddie Howe's first transfer window at the helm, Dan Burn was one of his first signings, joining from Brighton for £13 million and he's gone on to become an integral part of the set up at St James' Park on and off the pitch.

Dan Burn is here for the long haul

Dan Burn wants to end his career at Newacstle

Last week it was revealed that Dan Burn had triggered another extension on his contract and speaking to the media (via Newcastle World) after the game against his old club on Saturday, Burn shared that the contract had actually been done a while ago before going on to say that he wants to end his career at Newcastle.

"The contract has been activated quite a while, for some reason it’s only coming out now.

“I’ve always said that I want to be here as long as possible so to activate that side of it obviously gives me a bit more security. But I want more and I’d love to be here longer.

"I’d love to finish my career here. I’ve moved home, my kids are back with their family and get to see them a lot, that was always the plan."

Dan Burn has been on of Newcastle's better players this season

Burn is aware that he is surrounded by top players and that when the squad is fully fit there's strong competition for places but he's got the drive to push for his place in the team.

"We’ve got very good players here and we are going in that upward trajectory so I’ve just got to try and keep going as long as I can.

"I feel like I’ve been playing well this season. I’m not going to be a player that’s just happy to be here and be a good trainer and sit on the bench - I want to play and believe I’m good enough to play.

"I honestly feel like I’m still getting better and have more improvement to make. I’ve got a load of games under my belt so that experience helps as well.

"I don’t feel as if I’m starting to decline or anything, I’m still fit, healthy and feel I’m playing a big role."

Dan Burn has actually been one of Newcastle's more consistent performers this season as the Magpies have struggled to hit any kind of form.
