Goals win games is perhaps the most flawless piece of logic that can be applied to football and when you don't score goals you can't pick up points and at the moment, Newcastle United cannot score goals.

Last season, Newcastle were a free-scoring side under Eddie Howe and while the defence wasn't as strong as it needed to be, there was always a feeling that we could out-score our opponent. This season, despite employing largely the same personnel, Newcastle are struggling in front of goal.

Long-time absentee Callum Wilson is approaching a return to action which, if nothing else, should light a fire under Alexander Isak's arse. The thing is, we don't know for how long Wilson will be available and with Eddie Howe reluctant to throw new signing Will Osula in at the deep end, the effect could be minimal.

Isak and Wilson have both proven that they up their game when there's a real threat that the other could steal their place in the starting lineup, and Isak clearly doesn't see Osula as a threat to his place yet and is merely coasting.

Newcastle are looking at Ipswich striker Liam Delap

With Callum Wilson's constant injuries and the fact that he's the wrong side of 30, it's time for Newcastle to look for a successor that is ready to hit the ground running. Will Osula may become a top player, but he's been seen as one for the future.

Strangely, though, one player that Newcastle United have in their sights as the answer is only six months older than Osula, but already has four Premier League goals this season.

Liam Delap came through the Manchester City academy and moved to Premier League new boys Ipswich in the summer for £20 million, but he's started so well for the Tractor Boys that Newcastle and several other clubs have stood up and took notice.

Tottenham are leading the race for Liam Delap

Now Caught Offside has claimed that several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle are weighing up a £33 million move in January for the 21-year-old.

Their report suggests that Tottenham are the current frontrunners for Delap's signature but Newcastle, Arsenal, Aston Villa and even former club Manchester City are all in the race.

Given that he's only just moved to Ipswich in the summer it's surprising that they are open to offers, but if they are set to make such a hefty profit it could be hard for them to turn down.

Right now it looks as though Newcastle will end up as an 'also ran' in this race, and with one 21-year-old striker already struggling for game time at the club, we don't see how Delap is the answer, as good as he is.
