As far as bad news goes, this season has rarely relented when delivering negativity for Newcastle United fans so it stands to reason that it would continue into the transfer window.
Injuries have not been the only big blight on Newcastle's progress this season as Financial Fair Play or Profit and Sustainability, whatever they're calling that con these days, has hampered Newcastle's ability to plug the gaps left by these long-term injuries.
Although those rules are set to be changed at the end of the season, it's likely that what Newcastle will have to play with in terms of spending money will not be enough to fix the problems that this season has shone a light on.
Now with two defenders set to be out for the rest of the calendar year, the Magpies entire transfer strategy will likely have changed as even more players will need to be brought in this summer.
If Newcastle need to spend more, they'll need to raise more funds and that's why Fabrizio Romano believes that Newcastle could be thinking about sacrificing Bruno Guimaraes to open up a bigger spending budget.
The Brazilian midfielder, who arrived from Lyon for £40million in January 2022, is one of the most popular players at the club, and also one of the most important, however, he recently signed a new contract which contains a £100million release clause that could come into play this summer as Romano told Caught Offside in his Daily Briefing.
“It’s also a possibility for Newcastle to sell one big star this summer too.
“It will depend on the final verdict about Financial Fair Play but it’s a possibility, from what I’m told.
“Newcastle would love to keep all their stars but some of them, like Bruno Guimaraes, have a release clause, so it’s gonna be time to follow those ones in the summer.
“I’m sure they want to add also some players to their squad in different positions, so it’s not only about the outgoings.”
Bruno being linked with a move away is nothing new, there are new reports every day that suggest that some club or another is tracking him.
We are still confident that we get another season at least out of the Brazilian. He loves it here and has repeatedly said so and we feel he will turn down any approaches made in the summer.
However, if it becomes a case of the club needing to sell him, that does change the narrative. Let's just hope we can get some bargains and keep the players that are going to move us forward and build around them, rather than having to sacrifice them to bring in quantity over quality.
