Gareth Southgate has announced his latest England squad - the final one before the European Championships - and there are no real surprises from a Newcastle United perspective.

There were four Newcastle players hoping to be a part of Southgate's latest England squad and 50% of them got their wish.

Despite being missing since March and being pretty woeful when he returned to action, Kieran Trippier has kept his place in Southgate's final friendly squad before it needs to be trimmed down for Euro 2024.

Also called up after making an impressive debut in March is Anthony Gordon who will be hoping to get more minutes to prove that he deserves to be on that plane to Germany in the summer.

Callum Wilson and Nick Pope miss out

That means that Callum Wilson and Nick Pope, who were both hoping for some solid minutes after returning from injury in the final few games of the season both miss out.

It's hardly a surprise as Pope only played one game after his shoulder surgery and that was the game against Brentford on Sunday where he conceded three goals (one was ruled out but he still conceded it). He did make a world-class save though, which he may have been hoping would be enough to show that he's back and ready.

Callum Wilson blew any chance he had of squirming his way back into the England squad when he picked up a mystery illness and missed two more games and only making a 9-minute cameo in the third.

Southgate has finally dropped Jordan Henderson

Even if they had been called up, Southgate still needs to trim the squad before Germany anyway, and they would likely have been the first on the chopping block.

Southgate has finally axed Jordan Henderson from his squad which might keep the Mackems quiet for a bit, although they still have Pickford to cling to, even though neither of them have represented Sunderland for years.

England play Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday 3rd June at St James' Park followed by Iceland on 7th June at Wembley.
