Eddie Howe has an uncanny ability to get the best out of players as long as they buy into his punishing training regime at Newcastle United.

The gaffer has said in interviews that he expects his players to be 100% committed to what he's trying to achieve and if he doesn't get that commitment then they won't succeed at the club.

So far there have been few players who have failed to make the grade with everyone from the previous regime stepping up their game while new signings have had to adjust to much tougher training sessions than they were used to before.

This has enabled Howe to get the most out of players like Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Sean Longstaff, although it does seemingly come at a cost of increased injury risk.

Anthony Gordon has had a stellar season

Anthony Gordon struggled to get up to speed at Newcastle initially

One player who admitted they found it difficult to adjust when they arrived on Tyneside is £45million former Everton winger Anthony Gordon who didn't hide from the fact that he struggled to cope with what was asked of him between January and the end of last season.

But the 23-year-old worked hard all summer, guided England U21s to European glory and cut short his break to come back to make sure he was ready for the season and he's not looked back since.

Gordon picked up the club's Player of the Year award and has broken into the England team in time for Euro 2024.

Jeff Stelling says Gordon is the most improved player this season

Now, TalkSPORT host Jeff Stelling has had to admit that he got it all wrong about Anthony Gordon when he thought the Magpies had overpaid for Gordon.

“Anthony Gordon is the most improved player of the season.

“When Anthony Gordon went to Newcastle from Everton, I wondered why? I didn’t see the player in him that Eddie Howe saw in him.

“This season he has been phenomenal and must be in that England squad and maybe even start for England.”

Anthony Gordon has proved a lot of people wrong in the last year, myself included. Long may it continue.
