We're no strangers to the weird and wonderful transfer rumour as Newcastle United fans, especially post-takeover, but sometimes you really do have to wonder where some outlets get their ideas from.

If you were to name a position that Newcastle have perhaps over-subscribed you would be forgiven for saying centre-mid, but you'd be wrong because the correct answer is clearly goalkeeper.

With Nick Pope as the club's number one, he is currently backed up by Martin Dubravka, John Ruddy, Odysseas Vlachodimos and Mark Gillespie.

While not all of those players have a future at the club, the one you'd suggest will remain beyond next summer is Nick Pope.

Could Nick Pope be on the move in the summer?

Newcastle and Liverpool have made contact for Mile Svilar of Roma

Not according to ASRomaLive.it who claim that Newcastle are eyeing up their 25-year-old 'keeper Mile Svilar with a view to a summer move, going on to claim that the Magpies will be looking to move on Nick Pope at the end of the season.

The site also claims Liverpool are in the mix for Svilar and will be getting rid of Allison come the summer.

Liverpool moved to sign former Newcastle target Giorgi Mamardashvili in the summer, loaning him back to Valencia for the duration of this season before moving to Anfield in the summer.

We never could get our head around the goalkeeper situation at Newcastle

Newcastle have been shopping around for goalkeepers, but with Martin Dubravka's move to Celtic never materialising and Nottingham Forest somehow convincing us to part with £20 million for Odysseas Vlachodimos, we found ourselves with too many goalkeepers, only one of which is any good.

Dubravka and Vlachodimos seem like the most likely candidates to be sold in the summer, not Nick Pope, and with Roma expected to demand €40 million (£33 million) for Svilar, we'd definitely have to move at least one of those two out of the club first.

Svilar has conceded seven goals in nine games so far this season, keeping three clean sheets, which is a better record than Martin Dubravka had for us last season as he deputised for Nick Pope.

We just can't see Eddie Howe selling Pope when he has Dubz and Ody to deal with first. Howe clearly never wanted Vlachodimos as is evidenced by the fact that veteran John Ruddy seems to be ahead of him in the pecking order.

The goalkeeper situation at Newcastle is a mess, and signing as a replacement for Nick Pope doesn't make sense right now. There may be an interest in Svilar, but we highly doubt it will be Pope who makes way.
