In 2019 Newcastle United loaned a young fullback from Eintracht Frankfurt who went on to score a blistering goal against Liverpool and sear his name into Geordie hearts.

There have been times when Newcastle fans have made the cardinal error of falling in love with a loan player, and a couple of times it has backfired.

Newcastle loaned Kenedy from Chelsea in January 2018 and the Brazilian winger was phenomenal, he was so good that we loaned him again the next season where he was absolute warmed over garbage.

Newcastle fell in love with a loanee again a year later

Despite that warning shot, fans once again fell in love with a loanee when Jetro Willems arrived on Tyneside. His ability to get up and down the pitch on the left-hand side of the pitch was exactly what Newcastle needed.

Willems put in some fine performances for Newcastle and scored a rocket of a goal against Liverpool on just his third appearance.

Unfortunately, the Dutchman tore his cruciate ligament in January 2020 which ended his time on Tyneside.

However, fans kept an eye on him via social media and as Newcastle started shopping around for a left-back, Willems name would always come up as the fans' preferred option, but it was never meant to be.

Willems still has a soft spot for Newcastle, as we do for him

Willems spoke of his desire to return to Newcastle but instead his career appears to have dropped off since leaving the Toon. He's since gone on to play for Greuther Furth, Groningen and now Dutch side Heracles Almelo who are 13th in the Eredivisie.

The 29-year-old was in Newcastle today and stopped off to take a photo at St James' Park to relive the happy times and posted the image on X.

"Just a normal day (at my old office) #NUFC"

We've got no idea what he's doing here, but it's great to see him back.
