Hot on the heels of the news of Loris Karius' one-year extension at Newcastle (which is now official), the club has confirmed that Paul Dummett is also set to stay for the 2023/24 campaign.
This will be Dummett's 12th season as a senior professional at the club, with the former Welsh international defender having made his debut in the 2-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the 2012/13 FA Cup when Alan Pardew was manager.
Dummett made just a solitary senior appearance last season, at center-back in the 2-1 Carabao Cup win at Tranmere Rovers, but his excellent character and status as a "club-trained" player for UEFA Champions League squad registration rules have moved Eddie Howe to offer him another year at St. James' Park.
There's no expectation that the Geordie defender will feature too much more in 2023/24, but there's no denying he's a useful emergency option to have in the squad.
Equally capable at either left-back or centre-back, though perhaps at his best in a three/five-man defence, Dummett staying should mean that the likes of Jamal Lewis and Javier Manquillo can be moved on to pastures new.
