Newcastle United have a fair few players they could cut from the roster this month without affecting, too much, Eddie Howe's squad.

Of course, the players most likely to bring in some kind of transfer revenue are ones who are at least close to the first-team squad, so losing these players could create problems were the team to be hit with another freak injury crisis, but hopefully last season got all that curse out of our system.

Martin Dubravka, Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron and Sean Longstaff could all leave this month and all could bring in at least some money to the club ahead of what we expect to be a busy summer window.

There is another player, though, that Newcastle could really do with clearing off the wage bill and that's left-back Matt Targett. Remember him?

Matt Targett could be allowed to leave Newcastle on loan this month

Matt Targett was excellent for Newcastle when on loan from Aston Villa but as soon as he made his move from Villa Park a permanent one, the 29-year-old has spent more time on the sidelines than on the pitch, and given the high wages he's on, he's burning through Newcastle's funds.

Fortunately, Geordie Boot Boys are now reporting that Targett could be about to depart Newcastle this month.

However, the catch is that they're only willing to let him leave on loan for now.

If it were up to us, we'd push for a permanent move

Geordie Boot Boys believe that there are several Premier League and Championship clubs and a couple in Europe who are tracking Targett, so it's a move that may well happen.

Personally, I'd clear him off the books completely. I'd take whatever hit we had to just to get him gone, he's a drain on the club's resources and at 29, he's getting to that point where a full recovery is very unlikely. He'll never be the same player again.

Sometimes, you just have to write off a bad investment. It may be harsh, but 27 appearances in two and a half seasons is laughable
