Newcastle United have yet to play their first game of 2025 but two players out on loan faced each other in League Two on New Year's Day;

Chesterfield hosted MK Dons on Wednesday evening with the visitors coming away with a 2-1 win

Each side boasted a Newcastle United loanee in their squad with goalkeeper Max Thompson between the sticks for Chesterfield and midfielder Joe White turning out for MK Dons.

Joe White was in and around the first-team at Newcastle a couple of times last season during the infamous injury crisis, but was sent out on loan by Eddie Howe this term to get more experience.

Joe White and Max Thompson faced off at Chesterfield today

It must be working with White getting himself on the scoresheet against his Newcastle teammate Thompson today.

White's goal came on the stroke of halftime, firing through a crowd of bodies according to the Derbyshire Times, and finding the bottom corner.

That was MK Dons' second goal with Chesterfield halving the deficit in the second half but unable to go out and find an equaliser.

Joe White was a key man in MK Dons' win over Chesterfield

The MK Citizen gave Joe White a score of 8/10 for his efforts against Chesterfield calling it a 'well-rounded' display.

"Glided through the game. Worked Dons out of tight pockets, found spaces and dropped into roles later on as others were taken off. A really well-rounded outing."

So, it was a good start to the year for young Joe White but not so much for Max Thompson.
