Newcastle United's recruitment team have finally awoken from their slumber and could be about to bid again for a player they failed to land earlier in the window.

Despite having signed John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, and not having managed to shift Martin Dubravka, TalkSPORT are claiming that Newcastle still retain an interest in James Trafford from Burnley.

In fact, it's believed that the Magpies will try again this summer to land the 21-year-old England international and are preparing a new bid.

You know, because who doesn't need five goalkeepers in their squad?

Trafford is back on the menu for Newcastle

There's only one way this deal works for us

In all honesty, we could see this happening with Newcastle loaning Trafford back to Burnley for the season.

With Nick Pope and Vlachodimos as the first and second-choice goalkeeper positions are pretty set for Newcastle next season, and if the Magpies don't manage to find a new club for Martin Dubravka, we'll still have a decent third-choice too, otherwise, we've still got Mark Gillespie and John Ruddy.

After conceding so many goals in the Premier League last season, Trafford has a bit of work to do to restore his reputation anyway, so far better he does that in the Championship with Burnley to get his confidence back up before stepping out for Newcastle.

It will cost Newcastle around £20 million to land Trafford

Mind, there has been no indication that Trafford would be loaned back to Burnley, this is just the only way the move makes any kind of sense.

Newcastle had a £16 million bid rejected earlier in the transfer window, which is understandable given that Burnley paid Manchester City £19 million for him just 12 months ago and City inserted a sell-on clause into the deal.

It will likely have to be a £20 million plus bid to land Trafford to make it worthwhile for Burnley, although the loan back could offset some of the fee if that's the route they take.
