Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali became a father for the first time this year, welcoming baby Leonardo into the world in January.

Leonardo's arrival coincided with a shaky spell of form for the Italy international at Newcastle United, which is to be expected.

The lack of sleep and strange emotions start well before babies are actually born, and that was clearly affecting Sandro, and it was showing in his performances for Newcastle.

Thankfully, of late, Tonali has rediscovered his form, and in the absence of Bruno Guimaraes, the Italian has really stepped up to drive the team from the midfield.

Sandro Tonali has had to change his sleeping arrangement at home ahead of match days

This week, Tonali has spoken to Italian outlet Sky Sport Insider about how he and his wife, Juliette, have coped with the sleeping arrangement.

“The first month was very difficult because everything is different. You never sleep at night, for example. My wife and I agreed to sleep in rooms prepared the night before the game.

“Since we play so much, I find myself alone three times a week. But we are very happy: every time we see our son, we experience an enormous number of emotions. It's a beautiful thing."

Sandro Tonali admits that it has been an up-and-down season

We're just glad that he's found something that's working for him as we need him now more than ever. Tonali admitted in the same interview that it has been a tough season.

"This year we've had a few ups and downs. But in February we started winning away from home and several games in a row. Then with the Champions League the atmosphere changed.

“It went much better. I think that getting through to the next round has given us some more confidence. March will be a busy month , between the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.”
