In terms of value for money you'd be hard pressed to find a player in the Premier League who was bought by the club and has provided more value than Fabian Schar has for Newcastle United.

If you remove free transfers and academy graduates, the £3 million Newcastle paid for Fabian Schar has to work out as one of the most valuable transfers in Premier League history.

Joining the club in 2018 from Deportivo La Coruna for a measly £3 million, the six years he has spent on Tyneside has seen him go from a decent defender to an unwanted squad member back to one of the most important players in the squad.

Just going off the goals he's scored he's proved to be a bargain. The season opening goal against Nottingham Forest in 2022, the stunner against Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League - they were worth £3 million a piece.

Other clubs are ready to pounce for Fabian Schar

Thanks to Newcastle's embarrassing transfer window this summer no long-term replacement for Schar has been sought yet and with his latest contract due to expire at the end of the season, it's time to start negotiating.

According to The Boot Room, however, another 12-month extension isn't going to cut it for the recently retired Swiss international and if the Magpies are serious about keeping him at St James' Park they're going to have to slap a multi-year offer on the table.

Other clubs are starting to take note of Schar and are obviously aware of his contract situation so Newcastle will need to prove they are serious in order to keep him.

Give the man what he wants, he's earned it

It's not believed that Fabian Schar has any desire to leave Newcastle, but he'd be foolish to not use the interest from other clubs to his advantage to get more from his current club.

The 32-year-old clearly feels he has more years left in him at the top level, and we've seen no signs to the contrary. In fact, stepping down from international duty will only help him prolong his club career.

As long as we sign someone to be his long-term replacement then we should absolutely keep him around, in a couple of years he may not be first-team starter but he would still be a handy substitute to have.
