Fabian Schar is serving a three-match ban for Newcastle United after picking up a red card against Southampton in the Premier League last weekend.

The Switzerland international missed Sunday's game against Bournemouth with Eddie Howe resorting to playing right-back Emil Krafth in his place.

It seems as the time off has given the 32-year-old some time to think as he's now made a big decision on his future.

Schar played in every game for Switzerland at Euro 2024 taking his international cap tally to an impressive 86 games.

Fabian Schar has called time on his international career

However, that will remain his total as the defender has called time on his international career announcing his decision on social media.

Schar left a touching message to the Swiss fans as he made his announcement via a video message.

"It filled me with great pride to appear on football pitches around the world with the Swiss cross on my chest.

"I was able to experience incredibly beautiful moments with the national team. The emotions I was able to experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. Your support over these years meant everything to me and I will carry you in my heart."

If his international retirement means he's fresher for Newcastle then we're happy

Handsome Fab still has a year left on his Newcastle deal and is likely to be offered another if he continues to impress as much as he had since Eddie Howe came in and revived his Newcastle career.

Schar had been cast aside by Steve Bruce and looked to be heading for a Newcastle exit before Howe spotted his ability and placed him in the team.

We absolutely love Fabi at NUFCFEED, the man never gives less than 100% when he's out on the pitch and he was sorely missed on Sunday against Bournemouth showing just how important he is to the side.

If retiring from international football extends his club career then we're all for it.
