Newcastle United get the Premier League underway in 2024 at Anfield tonight with an 8pm kick-off against Liverpool.

It's a fixture that nobody from the Newcastle side is looking forward to as the Magpies have failed to win at Anfield in 27 attempts. History has to change at some point but given how Newcastle have been playing recently, it's unlikely that tonight will be the night the streak ends.

Eddie Howe would need every one of his squad fighting fit to stand a chance tonight and we've not had that all season. Now though, Jordan Cronin of Newcastle World has said that Newcastle will be without two more key players tonight.

Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson face late fitness tests

We'd already predicted that Wilson would be on the bench, but now he may not be available at all.

We did have Kieran Trippier starting in our prediction after he looked half-decent against Nottingham Forest, even though he did play Chris Wood onside for one of their goals.

We'll be watching through our fingers tonight

Kieran Trippier has looked like he's needed a rest for weeks now and he may be about to get it as Trippier and Wilson both face late fitness tests ahead of tonight's clash.

The England fullback may not be anywhere near his best lately, but he's still a leader on the pitch and that aspect of his game will be missing tonight if he doesn't make the squad.

Confidence is the lowest it has ever been for us, so we're not expecting much from tonight but avoiding being tonked would be nice. If we can keep it to 3-0 maximum that'll be something.
