Gareth Southgate's England contract is due to expire after the conclusion of Euro 2024 next year.

While The FA could still offer Gareth Southgate another contract extension, they are also aware that the England boss may feel that eight years is enough and step down from the role after the European Championships next year.

As such The FA are drawing up a shortlist of candidates they'd like to see potentially take over and according to 90mins, the Newcastle United gaffer is on that list.

Eddie Howe has often been earmarked for the England job, even during his days as Bournemouth manager, but after taking Newcastle from relegation certainties to a Champions League side in less than two years, he's very much on the FA's radar now.

Thankfully he's not the only one and the England chiefs have also got their eye on Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and perhaps more surprising is that Steve Cooper of Nottingham Forest is also in the mix.

Obviously, I get the Eddie Howe thing, he's young, he's English and he's done amazing things at Bournemouth and Newcastle. Pep Guardiola speaks for himself, he's probably the best manager working today, definitely in the Premier League.

Steve Cooper .... Welsh, has Nottingham Forest battling relegation. I mean, yeah he kept Forest in the Premier League, but he bought a million players to do it. Although, I suppose that does show that he can make a team out of a cobbled-together squad who haven't played together regularly. Wait ... Maybe he is the man for the job.

Frankly, I don't care if it's Steve Cooper or they dig up Tommy Cooper, as long as they stay away from Eddie Howe. He's ours and he's still got a lot to do for Newcastle before he leaves us for pastures new.
