The Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are a well-documented shambles but clubs are still forced to abide by them, and so, despite Newcastle United's owner's vast wealth, the club must sell before they can buy this January.

There are a few players who seem to be heading for the Newcastle exit, although these are the same players we've been trying to shift for a year who weren't expected to bring in much revenue back then, so will bring in even less now.

Miguel Almiron looks to be heading back to the MLS with Charlotte FC, and Kieran Trippier still remains likely to leave according to reports.

Sean Longstaff is also available in January with a few Premier League clubs said to be interested.

Newcastle could listen to offers of around £45m for Harvey Barnes

However, Luke Edwards has now claimed in The Telegraph that Newcastle could look to part with Harvey Barnes if an offer of around £45 million were to come in. That's just a bit more than the £39 million Newcastle paid Leicester City for the winger in 2023.

Barnes has had his moments at Newcastle, there's no doubt about that, but quite often his highlights have come when he's entered the game late from the bench and tortured tired full-backs.

When starting, Barnes doesn't affect the game anywhere near as much as Anthony Gordon and is therefore seen as a super-sub. A moniker that both he and Eddie Howe aren't too fond of, but if the shoe fits.

Harvey Barnes is unlikely to leave Newcastle in January

Edwards does say that it would be more of a 'shock' transfer and that he doesn't expect any clubs who'd take on Harvey Barnes would have the funds to do so in January.

We've got mixed feelings on this one. We can see the talent Barnes has and his goals have been vital for us this season, but his inconsistency and inability to sustain his effectiveness over 90 minutes leaves him leagues behind Gordon.

If he could do the job on the right that he can do on the left, he'd be a passable option over Jacob Murphy, but he's so far shown to be far more adept on the left.

Making a profit on a player not guaranteed to play in these PSR times is too good an opportunity to pass up, really.
