Rumours around a return to Merseyside for Anthony Gordon have persisted since it was revealed that Newcastle United had toyed with the idea of selling the winger to Liverpool to ease PSR fears.

In a moment of madness, Newcastle considered letting Anthony Gordon leave the club for Premier League rivals Liverpool as fears mounted over a possible points deduction for breaching PSR.

Fortunately, Newcastle were able to raise the funds needed by other means, namely selling two bright young stars in Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, but the seed has been planted now and the media just keep watering it.

Newcastle had a figure in mind for Gordon, believed to be around £80million, almost double what they paid Everton for him 18 months prior, and that was said to be too much for Liverpool.

Fabrizio Romano still believes Gordon is too expensive for Liverpool

That being said, it hasn't stopped journalists from writing literally every day about how Gordon could move to Liverpool this summer.

Fabrizio Romano has been speaking about it to GiveMeSport and he remains unconvinced that a move could happen this summer, but does admit that Liverpool need to find a new forward.

“Upfront, it depends on the opportunities. If there is an opportunity, why not? For example, Anthony Gordon was one of the names they considered internally; there was a possibility to make the deal happen, but not under Newcastle's conditions.

“They believe Newcastle were asking too big a fee for Anthony Gordon, which is why the deal didn't happen, but this is showing how Liverpool could be reactive and ready in case they feel there is an opportunity also upfront.”

Newcastle have the power to negotiate again

Romano is sticking with the "he's too expensive" line, and now that Newcastle are no longer scared of breaching PSR this summer, we reckon £80million would no longer be enough to seal the deal anyway, now that they once again have the power.

It has been suggested that Newcastle will offer Gordon a new contract when he returns to the club, which makes sense as he must be feeling slightly betrayed after being offered up.

We're still keeping everything crossed that the rumours don't lead anywhere, but you just never know with football. No matter how confident we are that we'll keep hold of Gordon, we're never 100%.
