Eddie Howe has given a brief update on Matt Targett after the defender limped off the field on Wednesday night.

Matt Targett was called into the starting lineup to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. Eddie Howe was trying him out in a new position to see how he'd perform as a midfielder.

Unfortunately, Howe doesn't have a lot of data to go on with that as Targett pulled up with a hamstring injury just 90 seconds into the game.

It looked like a painful one by the way Targett reacted when he went down

It was clear from the way he reacted that his night was over and he was potentially looking at another forced spell on the sidelines.

Targett hasn't had the best of luck with injuries since he made his loan move from Aston Villa permanent in a deal worth £15million.

Injuries forced him out of the side early last season which caused him to lose his spot in the starting lineup to Dan Burn, which he never got back.

Now, just as Howe was trying to find a way to use him, he picked up another injury that didn't look good.

It looks like it could be another long-term injury for Newcastle to deal with

In fact, Eddie Howe said in his pre-match press conference this morning, (via The Chronicle), that he fears the worst.

“I don't think it looks good but he's having a scan today so we'll know more then. Whenever you see a player come off with a hamstring injury you fear the worst.”

Fingers crossed that the scan reveals that it was just a minor injury or we may have another long-term casualty to add to the list.
