It's no secret that the FA have Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe in their crosshairs to replace Gareth Southgate as England boss.
Southgate's contract will expire in December with the former Middlesbrough boss stating that he would be stepping down after Euro 2024.
That would leave the FA searching for his replacement and they have long been admirers of Eddie Howe, even pre-dating his time at Newcastle.
Howe has spoken about the links to the England job and downplayed the idea of taking it up while he's still focused on his club role.
The Telegraph are now reporting, however, that whatever the outcome from Sunday's Euro 2024 final against Spain, they will offer Gareth Southgate a new contract and see him as the man to lead the Three Lions at the World Cup in 2026.
The report states that nobody has been approached about the role in anticipation of Southgate's contract expiring, and the FA will want to start talks with Southgate over a new contract after the tournament.
Great news for Newcastle fans who don't need to worry about our gaffer being poached, but terrible news for England fans who are partial to being entertained by their national team.
It's hard to go all in on Southgate, as much as it brings me sheer joy to do so. The man's brand of football is the absolute worst, but this is our second Euros final in a row so he's doing something right.
We honestly believed that Graham Potter was just twiddling his thumbs at home, turning down club offers and waiting for Southgate's contract to expire, but it's looking like he may have to take up a new job after all.
We've been saying for a while that Southgate was going to fluke his way to winning the Euros and he's now one game away from doing just that. Whatever you think of him as a manager, it would be hard to be too upset were he to stay on.
Although, he could just go out while he's on top. Time will tell.
