Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon started for England again at Wembley last night as the Three Lions fell to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Greece.

Greece had never before beaten England, an in fact, had never even scored at Wembley before last night. Not only did the former European champions score twice, they also had three goals ruled out and one shot cleared off the line.

England were absolutely woeful at the back from start to finish with the scrappy injury time winner epitomising everything that was wrong with the England defence.

However, with no strikers on the pitch for the first hour, Lee Carsley's side offered very little going forward either.

Anthony Gordon has so far done little to convince anyone he deserves to start for England

The Guardian gave Anthony Gordon a 4/10

Anthony Gordon was part of that toothless attack and failed to have any real impact on the game with nothing to aim for in the box.

The Guardian rated the players after the game and it's safe to say that they weren't overly impressed with the Newcastle United winger.

"Anthony Gordon (LW) Ineffective. Rarely beat his full-back and his end product was disappointing, although he did not have a target to hit. 4"

Gordon was the sacrifice as Lee Carsley decided to bring on a striker

Gordon was hooked on the hour mark with striker Ollie Watkins replacing him with the Aston Villa man firing a shot just over the bar with his second touch of the game.

While we agree that Gordon didn't have the best of games, we do feel that 4 is a very harsh score. At least he was trying, and there were a few occasions when his own teammates were getting in his way.

No England players can have come away from that game with their heads held high so Gordon shouldn't feel too down on himself. The 'exciting' experiment was clearly a failure right from the off, so hopefully it's a big lesson learned for Lee Carsley who takes his side to Finland on Sunday.
