If there was one player who had actually earned a spot on that plane as England flew out to Germany for Euro 2024 it was Anthony Gordon.

Gareth Southgate will have had the majority of his squad picked in his head already and their league form would have done little to sway his decision, but one man who grafted to the best of his abilities all season and earned his spot in that squad was Newcastle United's Player of the Season, Anthony Gordon.

It wasn't just a Newcastle fan bias saying that either, pundits, presenters and commentators were all pleading with Gareth Southgate to utilise Gordon more at the tournament.

In the end, Gordon was given just four minutes of game time as England trundled to the final before being beaten by Spain.

Lee Carsley will surely use Anthony Gordon more

Now, Gareth Southgate has gone and Lee Carsley, who managed Gordon and the England U21s to European Championship victory in the summer of 2023 where Gordon picked up Player of the Tournament, is in charge so we expect Gordon will be given a bigger opportunity to prove what he can do in the upcoming games against Ireland and Finland.

Gordon hasn't had the best of starts to the season, he looks tired, and almost not bothered. That being said, he got no game time during the Euros and has had minimal time to train with the Newcastle group, so he's obviously not 100% yet.

That being said, when you listen to him speaking about the Euros and not being selected in the interview he did with ITV Sport, then you can almost hear that he could be feeling a bit demoralised too.

Gordon was disappointed not to get more minutes in Germany

It probably didn't help that he was touted to his boyhood club for PSR reasons too, but let's just blame Gareth Southgate instead. Here's what he had to say about not being played by Southgate.

“I was disappointed. Just because of myself, I believe in myself so much, I feel unstoppable especially at that point with the season I have had. I felt nobody could defend me or deal with me over 90 minutes. I felt I was ready to go and really impress people and help the country win the trophy.

“So to envision what I visioned to what it was, it was disappointing.”

Gordon didn't knock on Southgate's door for answers

Gordon was then asked what Southgate said to him about not being selected.

“Nothing really. I didn’t even really ask. I am not really that type of guy. I just like to get on with what I want to do.

“I believed in myself so even from the bench I was thinking if he brings me on I am going to be ready and change the game, but it didn’t happen.”

We're not saying that Gordon would have turned the game against Spain and won us the Euros ... or are we?
