Newcastle United confirm news hinted at by Eddie Howe on Tuesday as Fabian Schar signs new deal

Newcastle United have moved to tie down one of the club's most important players for another year as Fabian Schar opts to sign a contract extension.

Perhaps the most value-for-money signing Newcastle has ever made, Fabian Schar is one of those players who has really kicked on under Eddie Howe.

The Swiss defender was close to leaving the Magpies under Steve Bruce as he was one of the players frozen out by the clueless bacon muncher.

Since Eddie Howe has come in, the 33-year-old as been a near ever-present in Howe's starting XI.

£3m was an absolute bargain for Fabian Schar considering what he has given Newcastle

While he is getting on a bit in footballing terms, especially considering he and 32-year-old Dan Burn are our current centre-back pairing, there's still a place for Schar in the squad.

It's likely the club will bring in new, younger defenders this summer and that partnership may well move to second-choice, but it's a hell of a pairing to have in reserve.

Signed from Deportivo la Coruna for just £3 million by Rafa Benitez in 2018, Schar has pretty much seen it all at Newcastle.

Fabian Schar never had any intention of leaving Newcastle

Fabi has told the official website that he is 'buzzing' to have signed another contract at Newcastle.

"I'm buzzing to extend my stay here. It's been a very good few weeks for everybody at Newcastle United after winning the Carabao Cup and I'm really happy now to sign another contract with this amazing club.

"It's my seventh season here and everybody knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I feel in the city, so I'm really glad to be continuing that.

"Now it's about looking forward and finishing the season as strong as possible."
