Newcastle United were riding the crest of a wave ever since the Carabao Cup victory and had got themselves up to third place in the Premier League.

Six wins in a row saw the Magpies fire themselves into the driving seat for a top-five finish and a place in next season's Champions League.

However, the Magpies were handed a reality check on Saturday as fellow Champions League-chasers Aston Villa reminded them that they won't have it all their own way between now and the end of the season.

Aston Villa's 4-1 served to remind us that Newcastle aren't invincible, and while they are in a good place in the league, nothing is guaranteed yet.

Alan Shearer and Ashley Williams agreed on who will miss out on Champions League qualification

Alan Shearer was on Match of the Day 2 last night, where they analysed the run-in for each team still in contention, and he and Ashley Williams were asked to make their predictions.

Thankfully, neither pundit suggested that Newcastle would miss out, with Shearer and Williams agreeing on who won't make the cut.

“Maybe Chelsea and Forest may miss out"

Newcastle have a tricky run-in, but Chelsea has the worst

Looking at each club's run-in, Manchester City have by far the easiest, but they do also have the FA Cup to think about, as do Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

The guys in the MotD2 studio agree that Chelsea has the toughest run-in, and while Newcastle have Chelsea and Arsenal to face, still, they still have a couple of games they'd be expected to win.

Beating Chelsea would go a long way to securing a spot in the top five for Newcastle and make life very hard for the Blues. It's going to be an exciting run-in, whatever happens.
