Newcastle United fell to their first defeat of the season on Saturday as Fulham brushed the Magpies aside with a comprehensive 3-1 win.

Eddie Howe's Newcastle were still way off the pace as they have been all season, but on this occasion, there was no scrappy comeback on the cards.

Things looked to be getting on track after Harvey Barnes pulled a goal back 28 seconds into the second half to make it 2-1 but for all of Newcastle's possession a second goal never really looked likely.

That was until Fabian Schar pounced on a poor pass out from the back giving himself a golden opportunity to square things up, before firing his shot inches wide.

Nick Pope was at fault for the second goal but also kept Newcastle in it

Nick Pope made some top class saves to make up for his hologram hands in the first half that allowed Emile Smith Rowe's tame effort find the bottom corner to make it 2-0 after he'd already struck the bar.

Alex Iwobi had a shot cleared off the line by Pope's knees even though the 'keeper knew very little about it.

If anyone looked like scoring again it was the hosts, and that's exactly what happened in stoppage time after Newcastle's captain, Bruno Guimaraes played a horrendous ball across the 18-yard-box that fell to the feet of Reiss Nelson who gratefully accepted the gift and made it 3-1.

Bruno's error led to Fulham's third goal in stoppage time

It was a ball so out of character for Bruno that we had to do a double-take to make sure it was actually him.

After the game, the captain took to Instagram to post a story apologising for his error and the failure of his teammates but promising to work to put things right.

"I'm man enough to own my mistakes. Tough day for all of us. But I'll never hide! We need to improve as a team and individually, and I'm 100% included in that. Keep working for better days ahead.🖤🤍 "
