Newcastle United were in training on Tuesday morning ahead of the massive Champions League tie with AC Milan on Wednesday night.

Eddie Howe is welcoming back injured squad members with Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff both back in action on Sunday for half an hour each.

Dan Burn was also rumoured to be close to a return and reportedly could even make it onto the bench against Milan, however, he too was not seen in training.

One step forward, two steps back

However, just as things were looking up, two key players were suspiciously absent from today's training session according to The Chronicle.

Close but no cigar for Burno

Sean Longstaff, who just returned to the side on Sunday was missing from the light session, but more worryingly, so was Anthony Gordon.

Gordon has been, by far Newcastle's most consistent player this season until Sunday at least where he was, like everyone else, way below par.

Anthony Gordon has been arguably Newcastle's best player this season

The former Everton man has been the biggest attacking threat this season for Newcastle and the idea of losing him for such a huge game is sickening. Especially given the lack of options in that position right now.

Fingers crossed the duo's absence is merely precautionary or else we could be seeing Matt Ritchie on the left-wing against Milan, or maybe Lewis Hall who has yet to really find his feet at Newcastle.

Harvey Barnes and Sven Botman, despite making good progress, were also not seen in training and will therefore be unlikely to feature in any capacity tomorrow, despite Barnes being close to a return on Sunday.
