The recent sale of Miguel Almiron and the impending finances from the outgoing Lloyd Kelly deal may afford Newcastle United the luxury of offering Alexander Isak a new contract.
Newcastle's record signing, Alexander Isak, has been consistently linked with a move away from Newcastle in recent weeks and months.
Arsenal are believed to be very interested in the striker, as are Chelsea, and while the southern-based media would have you believe that everyone wants to live in London, Isak has shown no hint of wanting a move away from Newcastle.
However, while talks over a new deal were shelved late last year, there is a desire to show Isak how much he is worth to the club with a new deal even though he has three years left on his current contract.
Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon all received bumper new deals recently, but the money just wasn't there to do the same for Isak who is already one of the club's highest earners.
However, now that Newcastle have cleaned up the wage bill and brought in some money, football finance expert Stefan Borson has told Football Insider that he expects Newcastle will use some of that money to give Isak a record-breaking new deal.
“I am sure it will be the highest contract they have offered.
“The reason they have held onto their big players is because it would be very expensive to sign Guimaraes or Isak. There are very few teams that can play that game and compete for signings over £100million.
“I think Arsenal could do it if they really wanted to. If it wasn’t Arsenal, who is going to buy Isak and who can afford him? Basically nobody and I include basically everybody.
“Bayern Munich have got Harry Kane, PSG seem to be in a new world, where their acquisitions seem to be in that £70million range, so they are not going to pay £100million.
“Nobody in Italy can do it. Man City don’t need Isak as a priority. You always want quality players, but City won’t buy Isak, so there are no buyers.
“The bottom line is, there are not many places he can actually go. They will offer him a new contract.
“He’s already got quite a lot left on his contract, but he’s clearly one of the best players in the Premier League right now and I don’t see him going anywhere.”
It is, of course, just pure guesswork by Borson, but it definitely feels as though making Isak the highest earner at the club would be the best way to silence all of this exit talk, along with acquiring Champions League football again. If we fail to qualify this season, we may have a problem.
Of course, whatever Newcastle do in terms of offering a new deal to Isak will directly affect what the club can spend in the summer, with transfers and wages all tied into the PSR calculations.
We're sure that's all been thought of, though. We're only guessing, of course, because the communication from the club lately is absolutely non-existent.
