Newcastle United are set to open contract talks with in-form winger Anthony Gordon in an attempt to thwart an approach from Liverpool following interest.

At the end of June, it was revealed that a move for Gordon had been proposed to Liverpool in a last-ditch attempt to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules with a potential 10-point deduction looming.

Thankfully for Toon fans, talks broke down as Liverpool didn't want to part with Jarell Quansah who they believe will be a future England international.

Now, Newcastle are hoping to tie Gordon down to a long-term deal with a significant pay rise.

Gordon to sign a new contract at Newcastle?

To comply with PSR, the Magpies sold Yankuba Minteh (£33million) and Elliot Anderson (£35m) to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively.

Newcastle didn't want to get rid of Gordon but felt it was something they had to do in order to avoid a points deduction.

The Gordon saga now looks to be getting ready for bed as the 11-goal winger could pen a new deal if the price is right.

TalkSPORT reported that the Magpies have a plan in mind to offer Gordon a lucrative new contract to fend off any further interest in the 22-year-old.

Gordon is currently on £60,000-a-week with his current deal but has done enough to show he deserves the pay rise.

Gordon was "over the moon" with Liverpool's interest

This is according to football super-journalist Fabrizio Romano, who commented on the deal between the two clubs that broke down late last week.

“What I’m told is the deal was never really close between Liverpool and Newcastle,” Romano said on his live stream.

“Liverpool and Newcastle had a conversation. They had an exchange about the possibility, but the price tag was way too high for Liverpool to make things happen.

“A swap deal was also really complicated as Liverpool didn’t want to lose some of their best players. So, it was an idea, it was a conversation but it was never something really close.

“The player was over the moon – the player was keen on joining Liverpool. But at the end between the two clubs, like Alexander Isak with Chelsea, it was never something really concrete.”
