Eddie Howe gives positive update on Fabian Schar after defender was stretchered off pitch on Wednesday night
Amid the crazy 4-3 win over Leeds United on Wednesday night, Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar was taken to the hospital after a serious-looking injury forced him out of the game.
It was a fairly innocuous challenge on the touchline near the dugout, but you could see by Fabian Schar's reaction that he'd done some damage in the tussle.
Initially, it had looked like he'd twisted his knee, with many speculating that it could be an ACL injury, which would have seen his season ended there and then.
After the game, however, Eddie Howe confirmed that Schar had been taken to the hospital to have scans on his ankle.
It's slightly better news than we expected on Fabian Schar
Other than a message from Fabian Schar promising to come back stronger, we'd not really had any updates until this morning. During Friday morning's press conference, Eddie Howe gave a slightly positive update on Fabian Schar's injury.
"Hopefully it is not too bad or not as bad as it first looked. That was the initial assessment.
"There's no break, we think it is just a ligament. He is seeing a specialist to get definitive answers. We are confident he will be back before the end of the season; those are the guidelines we've been given (after initial assessment)."
It's going to be a good few weeks on the sidelines for Fabi
Even if it is ligament damage, it's likely that we won't be seeing Schar until the last couple of games of the season.
The issue is, by then, it may well have already been decided that he won't be receiving a new contract, so those last few games could be Fabian Schar's farewell tour.
It would be a very sad way to go out after such a long time at the club, though. Here's hoping he can come back strong and earn another extension.
