Last night's seven-goal thriller against Leeds United, in which Newcastle United came from behind three times before taking the lead in the 102nd minute, will live long in the memory for many fans.

However, while the euphoric feeling that washed over St James' Park as Harvey Barnes scored the latest winner in Premier League history was something to savour, when it faded, there was a feeling of concern.

The reason Harvey Barnes had those extra 13 minutes to find the winner was that Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar had been stretchered off the field after a nasty-looking injury.

Fabian Schar is no stranger to putting his body on the line for the Magpies, but this one was a pretty innocuous incident, which saw the Swiss defender fall awkwardly under a challenge.

Fabian Schar knew instantly that something was wrong as he fell under the challenge

Initially, it looked like a knee injury, with some fans on social media speculating that it looked like a potential ACL injury.

Eddie Howe, however, confirmed after the game that it was an ankle injury and that Fabian had been sent to the hospital to have it looked at.

Watching the replays, it's still hard to make out exactly what happened, but you can see that Schar knew instantly that he'd done something bad.

Schar's injury comes just days after Eddie Howe hinted at a new contract

At the time of writing, we still don't have an update on Schar's injury, so we are all just left to speculate and, more importantly, to hope that it's not as bad as it looked.

With Schar's contract due to expire at the end of the season, many fans are fearing that it may be the last time we see the 34-year-old in the black and white for Newcastle, with some even fearing that it could be a career-ending injury.

It's a particular blow coming just a few days after Eddie Howe had hinted that there could be another contract on the table for the man who has been Mr Dependable for Howe since his arrival on Tyneside.

Fingers crossed we hear something soon and that it's a lot more positive than we're all thinking.
