Newcastle United Women have been busy in the transfer market this summer as they gear up for life in the Championship.

Becky Langley's Ladies gained promotion last season after a stunning season in the FA Women's National League Premier and now, in a head mess of the highest order, they will play next season in the Championship, which is one step below the Women's Super League.

To make sure they are ready for this new challenge, Langley has been very active in the transfer market bringing in no fewer than four players into the club already this summer.

The latest addition has caused quite a stir having picked up last year's Golden Glove winner from direct rivals, Sunderland.

Claudia Moan turned her back on Sunderland to join Newcastle

Claudia Moan spoke to the Newcastle United official site about the reasons she chose to make the move that so few players ever make, trading in Sunderland for Newcastle.

"I am delighted to be joining Newcastle United, who have shown in the past two seasons that they are a very ambitious club.

"The set-up at the club is fantastic which is something I know will help me settle in very quickly.

"I will give everything I possibly can to the team and the fans, who I know give incredible support to the club. I can't wait to get started next week."

Derbies return to the North East next season

It's a huge statement of intent by Newcastle picking up Moan from Sunderland after they finished third in the Championship last season.

Now the North East rivalry and derby days gets to live once more as the women will do battle in their race to reach the Women's Super League.

At least the lasses can keep the rivalry going eh? Unless we get drawn in the cup again, I can't see the men's team crossing paths again for a while.
