January has been earmarked as the month for Newcastle United to trim the fat from the squad and indeed the wage bill.

Things haven't gone according to plan so far with Martin Dubravka now being begged to stay after a run of first-team games in which he has kept several clean sheets. Nick Pope's return is still a couple of weeks away and if Newcastle can avoid spending this month, they will, therefore Eddie Howe is trying to convince Dubravka to stick around for another year.

The proposed exit of Miguel Almiron has more twists and turns than the slides at Wet n Wild, with the latest news suggesting that we could see Miggy hang around until the summer, too.

However, journalist Alan Nixon has written on his Patreon that there is one Newcastle player who is available this month who is being tracked and could be on the move.

Could Targett be on the move?

Matt Targett is being eyed by Leicester and Brentford

Newcastle are willing to listen to offers for Matt Targett this month. The 29-year-old has barely featured for the Magpies since his £15 million move from Aston Villa which followed an impressive loan spell.

Targett has been injured even more than Callum Wilson, but is currently fit and ready to go. We're expecting him to play a part in tomorrow's game against Bromley.

Now with Alan Nixon claiming that Brentford and Leicester are weighing up a move for the left-back, it would be in Eddie Howe's best interest to give Targett a run out so those clubs can see that he is indeed fit and worth a bid.

Bromley could be Matt Targett's audition to get a move away from the Toon

It was reported going into January that Targett would be available for loan, and that may still be the case, but even a loan move would give Newcastle a breather from his high wages for a few months.

If Targett can come through 90 minutes against Bromley tomorrow we may actually see some movement in the transfer market.

It's hardly the big move we've been hoping for to bring money into the club, but every little helps.
