The journalists tasked with covering Newcastle United have a thankless job a lot of the time. Even when reporting on hard-faced facts, they will come under fire on social media for simply doing their job.

The Telegraph's Luke Edwards gets it a lot from the Newcastle fanbase, albeit usually more for his opinions than facts, but as a non-Newcastle supporter, Edwards has a bit more of an objective view than most of the other journalists assigned to Newcastle, and that can also rub fans up the wrong way.

However, Edwards' lack of bias was thrown right out of the window on Saturday after Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam, who was covering the game for Soccer Saturday, did the most Sky Sports/Southern-based media thing imaginable after Alexander Isak scored his second goal of the game.

When reporting on Isak and Newcastle's second goal against Southampton, Mark McAdam wasted no time in dropping Arsenal's name into the mix prompting a response from Luke Edwards that Newcastle fans absolutely loved.

Luke Edwards might get a statue outside St James' Park after this

Sky Sports posted the clip from Soccer Saturday to their X account which shows McAdam mentioning Arsenal's pursuit of Isak immediately before then comparing him to Thierry Henry to hammer home the Arsenal link.

"Quite remarkable, Alexander Isak is the man that so many Arsenal fans want the Gunners to sign, and he’s proving just why! He’s now got his second goal of the game and given Newcastle a 2-1 lead.

“He takes a good touch and, like Thierry Henry, he opens his body up in front of goal and then caresses it, side foots it past Alex McCarthy into that bottom corner.”

Reposting the clip, Luke Edwards commented "Striker scores for Newcastle, so let’s talk about Arsenal signing him immediately 🤣🤣🤣" which didn't go down well with the Sky Sports man who fired back at Edwards with fighting talk.

"Not fancy talking to my face Luke ? I was at the game and always happy to chat.

"Especially after some of the recent questions in press conferences I’ve seen from you. Imagine if I went straight on Twitter to have a pop…

"Live TV is live TV."

Sky Sports are pushing the Arsenal narrative hard and it's great to see them being called out

Luke Edwards then pointed out that he was merely making a joke that McAdam took very personally.

"I’ll happily talk to your face but I wasn’t at the game today.

"It just seemed a strange way to start talking about Isak scoring for Newcastle to me and it’s been going on for weeks at Sky, framing everything about when he leaves. It’s annoying.

"I was making a lighthearted comment hence the laughing emojis but thanks for the feedback on my own style of questioning x"

Fans in the replies were cheerleading for Edwards for telling it like it is, and we have to add our voice to that. Regardless of what McAdam meant by "Live TV is Live TV", he'll have been thinking about what he was going to say before the feed came to him, that's no excuse.

To add insult to injury, though, not once has McAdam apologised for making the Arsenal connection. We wouldn't be surprised if he was told to do it by the Sky Sports producers in all honesty.
