Allan Saint-Maximin looked to be heading to Serie A on the final day of the January transfer window after a move from Fenerbahce to Napoli had been agreed.
However, the deal became messy when Fenerbache, who only had Allan Saint-Maximin on loan from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, demanded they be compensated for the move.
The three clubs could not work out a deal and the move collapsed leaving Saint-Maximin stuck in Turkey where things haven't exactly panned out for the Frenchman.
We thought it was an odd move when it came about and could see that he and Jose Mourinho were likely to clash, and while that's not the driving force here, we'd be shocked if there wasn't some friction.
A statement from Napoli confirmed that the deal had fallen through saying “We tried to sign Allan Saint-Maximin until the end but there were issues. We couldn’t match the requests made by Al Ahli, same for Fenerbahce.”
In typical Saint-Maximin fashion, the winger took to social media to give a cryptic account of his side of events. I tell you, when he releases a book it's going to be epic. "What the hell is Helios? The Allan Saint-Maximin Story".
“Thank you so much. I have read all your messages, just thank you, guys. I will never forget your support.
“So know one thing, and these are not just words! I love you too. It would be a lie to say that everything has been easy lately. There are many things I didn’t understand, especially with the way certain things were handled, that have been said, or with my father’s illness, and other things…I will let you know everything soon.
“A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes. I will fight until the end for you, no matter what happens off the pitch. I will never be one of those ungrateful people. Thank you for considering me as one of your own.”
Wherever he goes, the drama follows. It couldn't be him, could it? Meanwhile, his bestie at Newcastle United, Joe Willock showed him some support in the comments on the Instagram post with a three-word message.
"Love you, brother"
It's great to see our former players still getting the love from their former teammates, and we all wish Allan Saint-Maximin well and hope he gets things sorted soon.
