Liverpool are interested in striking a deal with Valencia for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, according to reports.

Local press has reported that the Georgian international has caught the eye of Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe thanks to his performances in La Liga where he kept 13 clean sheets in 37 games, only three other goalkeepers had more shutouts in the league last season.

Mamardashvili has also made his presence known in addition to the European Championships this year, helping his national side to the last 16 of the tournament in their first-ever appearance at the finals.

It is thought that he could cost interested clubs as much as £35million this summer, a fee that could rise due to his impressive performances at the Euros.

Newcastle have had a bid rejected for Mamardashvili

With the departure of Loris Karius imminent and Martin Dubravka also looking set to leave, the Magpies have found themselves in a situation where they need to bring in a new goalkeeper to challenge Nick Pope the number one spot.

Newcastle believe Mamardashvili is their man, but may need to splash the cash after Valencia reportedly rejected A £25m bid for the Georgian.

Now, Sporting Witness is reporting that Liverpool has a keen interest in signing the 23-year-old and may even be in the drivers seat for his signature.

It would be a hammer blow to the Magpies' summer transfer plans with the club already having to make up a £30m deficit to comply with PSR.

Which other goalkeeper options are available for Newcastle this summer?

Earlier in the month reports surfaced saying that Newcastle had agreed a fee and personal terms with Burnley for James Trafford. The deal, which was set to be worth £16m fell through over the last two weeks due to a sell-on clause Manchester City own.

Burnley are looking for at least £20m for the 21-year-old who signed for the Clarets in 2023 after winning the under-21's Euros with England.

Another option is Real Madrid shot-stopper Andriy Lunin who Newcastle have a keen interest in.

The Magpies are ready to bid £21m for the Ukranian who has featured for his country in the European Championships but faces tough competition from Arsenal with Aaron Ramsdale; another Newcastle target looking set to leave the Gunners this summer.
