Newcastle United are ready to place a bid for Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, but will have to fend off interest from Arsenal, according to reports.

The news comes as Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford looks set to sign for the Magpies this summer to bolster the competition for Nick Pope.

Third-choice keeper Loris Karius has been released by the club, and 35-year-old Martin Dubravka is also looking like he could leave amid interest from Celtic and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Sport suggests that Lunin could cost Newcastle and the Gunners as much as £21million this summer.

Lunin is a Champions League winner

Lunin joined the Spanish Giants in 2018 from Zorya Luhansk for a reported £7m plus add-ons.

He has only truly become a key figure in the Real Madrid side this season after Thibaut Courtois suffered a near season-ending injury.

The Ukrainian international made 21 appearances in La Liga last season and helped Real on their way to another Champions League win.

Newcastle would benefit from a player with that sort of experience in the side, especially if a young goalkeeper like Trafford is joining.

Newcastle have already been busy in the transfer window.

It's looking like it's going to be a busy summer for the Magpies as they look to offload and bring in more depth to wakened areas on the pitch.

The arrival of Lloyd Kelly fills a hole in a defence riddled with long-term injuries.

Trafford's impending arrival gives the Magpies another solid option between the sticks, Lunin would also provide great depth and competition for Pope.

The Magpies are also set to announce the permanent signing of Lewis Hall who impressed while on loan last season.
