There was a transfer rumour around Newcastle United that wouldn't seem to go away, and when rivals Sunderland were also thought to be interested, the rumour mill went up another gear.

It had been reported that Newcastle had been considering a move for Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

Those rumours started about a year ago, and then later last year, it was being reported that Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris was keen on a reunion with the former Arsenal man.

Naturally, with Sunderland's reported interest, it was easy to dig up the old Newcastle links and pit the two against each other.

Matteo Guendouzi is heading to the land of cheap hair plugs and brilliantly white teeth

Guendouzi worked with Regis Le Bris at Lorient, and it was thought that the Frenchman was keen for a reunion in the north east.

However, Fabirizo Romano is now reporting that Matteo Guendouzi is heading to Turkey after striking a deal with Fenerbahce.

The fee is thought to be around £25 million, and honestly, we couldn't be more relieved.

We never saw Matteo Guendouzi at Newcastle United

Matteo Guendouzi moving to Newcastle to play under Eddie Howe never made sense to us, given Eddie Howe's strict no d**khead policy (granted, some slip through the cracks, Mr Isak).

There's no question that Guendouzi is a talented player and a good battler in midfield, but his attitude has left a lot to be desired in the past, and that just didn't seem to line up with what Eddie Howe looks for in his players.

A move to Sunderland may have made sense, but it looks like the Frenchman isn't returning to the Premier League any time soon.
