Newcastle United flirted with the idea of selling Anthony Gordon to Liverpool in the summer when scrambling to find a way to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Labelled as the 'nuclear option', selling Gordon to Liverpool would have netted Newcastle a sizeable profit but would have crippled the team. Thankfully, the Magpies were able to find another way, although arguably also a pretty damaging one by selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson.

Some outlets pointed to the Liverpool rumours as a reason why Anthony Gordon didn't get many minutes at Euro 24 as he was distracted by transfer talk.

Since then, Gordon has spoken about the rumours pleading with the media to leave him to play football.

Dietmar Hamann says Liverpool should sign Anthony Gordon

One man who didn't get that message was former Newcastle and Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann who has spoken about how Liverpool should use the fact that Gordon grew up supporting them as a lure to bring him to Anfield (via Newcastle World).

“There have been reports that Anthony Gordon was a Liverpool fan growing up and, although Mohamed Salah cannot be replaced, you need to look at players who can influence games.

“At the moment, I would look at Gordon and Jarrod Bowen as two brilliant wingers in the Premier League. Gordon had a tough start at Newcastle but has now won the fans over. Newcastle are probably reluctant to let him go because he's their most important player with Alexander Isak.

“I love watching him and he's certainly another player Liverpool are looking at. If he did grow up supporting Liverpool, people in England are very very connected to their first clubs and I know that from having players at Liverpool who were Everton fans growing up. When it comes to transfers, it could be a deciding factor.”

As long as Newcastle continue this upward trajectory we should be able to keep hold of our stars

We can see Gordon playing for Liverpool in the future, but it certainly won't be in the immediate future with the star fully committed to Newcastle United and loving life on Tyneside.

Anything can happen in football, obviously, but we see Gordon being at the club for a few more years yet, alongside Alexander Isak. Clearly, if we fail to secure European football, this could drastically change things, but we're heading in the right direction, we're still competing in the Carabao and FA Cups, so as things stand, there's no real reason for any of our top players to be looking elsewhere.

It's probably a bucket list thing for Gordon to play for Liverpool, and that's fine, but you can't have him until we're done with him, alright?
