Newcastle United let a couple of players leave upon the expiration of their contracts in the summer - although Eddie Howe almost kept one of the pair.
Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett were set to leave the club when their contracts expired in the summer, but there was a chance that Newcastle could have snuck into Europe if Manchester City beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final, in which case, Howe would likely have handed Paul Dummett an extra year to ensure he had cover for the extended fixture list.
Man United triumphed at Wembley, and Dummett's Newcastle career came to an end.
Since leaving, Matt Ritchie moved to his old club, Portsmouth while Dummett struggled to find a club.
Eventually, Wigan Athletic took on Dummett on a short-term contract during which he made just five appearances. Wigan opted not to extend his short-term deal and the former Newcastle and Wales defender has no joined Carlisle United.
Carlisle are managed by another former Magpie in Mike Williamson who played alongside Dummett at the Toon. Williamson offered up some words on Dummett for Carlisle's website.
"He brings a lot of experience at a high level. I think he'll be a really good influence on the changing room on and off the field."
Williamson and Carlisle will need all of Dummett's experience with Carlisle sitting rock bottom of League Two as things stand.
We wish them the best of luck in turning things around and climbing to safety.
But can we just once again touch on the fact that Eddie Howe wanted to keep Dummett. The man who took months to find a club, found one, got shifted on after five outings and will now play for the team bottom of League Two. Howay, Eddie, this is what we're talking about, mate. Use your basement for something useful, not ageing Newcastle players.
