There was a bit of positive transfer news for Newcastle United today as one defensive target has had his asking price drastically reduced by his club.

Of course, this is Newcastle, though, so the good news must be accompanied by bad and that is the case here for sure.

Yesterday we reported that Marc Guehi could now move this month for just £40 million after all the speculation in the summer that Crystal Palace were holding out for near £70 million from Newcastle to get a deal done.

But, it's not Guehi we're talking about here. We're looking at Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade who was linked to the Magpies last year.

Loic Bade could be off to Liverpool rather than Newcastle

Sevilla have chopped £30m off their asking price for Loic Bade

Bade has a £50 million release clause in his contract, but a report in The Sun suggests that he could be available for as little as £20 million this month as Sevilla look to balance their books.

The 24-year-old had a spell in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest but never made an appearance, but now his performances for Sevilla have alerted Newcastle and Liverpool to his quality.

And, here's the bad news, it appears that Liverpool look set to beat Newcastle to the bargain move due to Newcastle's reluctance to spend money in this transfer window.

Should Newcastle take a punt on £20m Loic Bade?

Liverpool reportedly see Bade as the ideal replacement for Virgil van Dijk, whereas Newcastle still need to find an eventual successor to Fabian Schar.

We still can't work out whether Newcastle have any money, or desire to spend this month, so it's not hard to believe that Liverpool could steal a march on us in this deal.

Of course, there's every possibility that Newcastle hadn't planned on making a move for Bade at all, but at £20 million, it's surely got to be worth a punt.
