Callum Wilson to be offered Newcastle United lifeline on one condition according to report

As Callum Wilson's Newcastle United contract ticks down to its summer expiration, the striker is back fit and fighting for his future at the club.

While it has been widely speculated that the number nine would leave the club in the summer as a free agent, there's still every chance that the 49-goal striker could yet be handed a stay of execution.

Wilson will not be short of offers should he leave the club, with West Ham and Leeds United both keen on the 33-year-old, but Eddie Howe may yet get to keep his man.

Talks have already taken place at the club regarding a contract extension for the striker, and while his age and injury record suggest that letting him go would be the most prudent option, there's no denying that having another striker on the books without having to fork out vast sums of money could be handy next season.

The Chronicle are now reporting that Wilson could be handed another deal if Newcastle qualify for Europe this season in a bid to go into next season with a fuller squad.

Similar to the Paul Dummett and Matt Richie situations last season, Eddie Howe will look to leverage European qualification to keep his trusted ageing stars at the club.

Newcastle missed out on Europe thanks to Manchester United putting in their one performance of the season in the FA Cup final, and as a result Dummett and Ritchie were released.

We're not opposed to Wilson staying but we have conditions of our own

We've been saying since he returned to fitness, that if Wilson can keep himself fit for the rest of the season and contribute with a few goals, then by all means, keep him around, but one more injury, we've got to cut our losses.

It would be easy to look at Wednesday night's performance and that first-half miss and say he's past it, but it wasn't the easiest of chances and he's still working his way back to match fitness so we have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Regardless of what we do with Wilson, though, a new striker has to be on the shopping list this summer.
