Newcastle United's central defender wishlist could be about to become a little bit shorter as Aston Villa lead the way to sign a centre-back linked with the Magpies.

Since the summer, Newcastle have been looking for the right fit to come in and provide an extra option beyond Fabian Schar for the right side of the centre-back pairing.

Marc Guehi was the most publicised pursuit, with figures of up to £75 million mentioned in the media and talks of a deal being imminent when, in fact, nothing could have been further from the truth.

There were other targets, of course, and since the summer transfer window ended, Newcastle have added more names to their list, one of which is Sevilla's Loic Bade.

Newcastle seem to have dodged a bullet when they missed out Diego Carlos

Aston Villa want Loic Bade to replace former Newcastle target Diego Carlos

After an ill-fated stop off at the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, Bade has gone from strength to strength at Sevilla, once again catching the attention of the Premier League.

While Newcastle have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old, it is Aston Villa who have made the first move according to Vamos Mi Sevilla.

Villa see Bade as the ideal replacement for Diego Carlos, who looks to be on his way out of Villa Park after the Midlands side beat Newcastle to his signature in 2022 ... it was fine, we got Sven Botman instead. We win!

Aston Villa's opening bid for Loic Bade has been rejected

Aston Villa's initial bid of €15 million (£12.6m) plus €5 million (£4.2m) in add-ons has reportedly been rejected with Sevilla demanding €22 million (£18.5m) plus €5 million in add-ons, as well as Carlos on loan.

Whether this will prompt Newcastle to get involved remains to be seen, but our gut feeling is that we'll let this one slide with a view to making more meaningful moves in the summer.

We've said this a lot this month, but we can't shake the feeling that we're going to end January with no additions to the first-team.
