Newcastle United spent a lot of time and effort on the fruitless endeavour of trying to sign England centre-back Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer.

Reports even suggested that the Magpies had gone as high as £70 million to make the deal happen before Palace pulled the plug on the deal after stringing Newcastle along for weeks.

Eddie Howe has since said that those reported figures were way wide of the mark, and now that the January transfer window is here, Marc Guehi's future is once again the focus of many a headline.

However, this time the destination is said to more likely be his former club, Chelsea rather than Newcastle who seem to have moved on.

Oliver Glasner insists Marc Guehi wants to stay at Crystal Palace

If a deal is there to be done at £40 million as reported, then, who knows, Newcastle may suddenly become interested again, although fans would surely prefer that doesn't happen going off the feedback in our comment section when Guehi's name is mentioned.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has spoken about the interest in his players (via The Chronicle) and has downplayed exit talks, but at the same time has left the door open.

“We still have (a lot of time) to go in the transfer window. Like always, everything can happen.

“But when you ask me, I want us to stay together with this squad. I know Trevoh [Chalobah] wants to stay, I know Marc wants to stay.”

Newcastle still have their eyes on AC Milan's defensive duo

We do hope that Newcastle have moved on to other targets. We can't get over the games that Crystal Palace played over the summer, as much as we'd have praised our board for doing the same thing.

Newcastle have already missed out on one defensive target with Abdukodir Khusanov heading to Manchester City, but there are still a few targets out there who haven't been snapped up.

Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw are both still at AC Milan and Newcastle were keen on both players in the summer and could return with further attempts to sign either of them.

However, we're still not expecting anything to happen this month with summer being a more likely window for Newcastle to make additions.
