Newcastle United are expected to once again be active in the January transfer window.

As Newcastle's project to eventually dominate the Premier League continues to roll on, it seems inevitable that the Magpies will be active in the transfer market in January.

It's looking extremely likely that Eddie Howe will be searching for another midfielder to replace Sandro Tonali who is set to be handed a hefty suspension next week. Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City seems to be the front-runner for that.

Newcastle have been linked with two Crystal Palace defenders

The central defensive positions also need attention. With Sven Botman having missed several games, it has exposed the lack of depth in that position with Jamaal Lascelles filling in. This leaves Paul Dummett next in line, and no disrespect to Dummett, who always gives his all, we need to be aiming higher.

Newcastle have reportedly been keeping tabs on two Crystal Palace defenders, Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen who were both on the pitch yesterday... allegedly.

The Newcastle forwards ran the Palace defence ragged yesterday and Guehi was actually at fault for one of the goals. Slipping over when trying to bring the ball under control, Guehi allowed Sean Longstaff to steam in and dispossess him before firing beyond Sam Johnstone.

It may be time for a re-think

After that performance, do Newcastle really want to pursue anyone connected with that Crystal Palace defence?

Obviously, it was a bad day at the office for Roy Hodgson's men, and it's not indicative of the quality in their side, but it will certainly have thrown up some questions for Eddie Howe and his recruitment team to ponder.
