The Newcastle United board met this week to discuss the January transfer window.

It's not expected that Newcastle will go mental in the winter window, likely saving their big targets for the summer, but there could still be movement.

One player the Magpies reportedly have their eye on is Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace, however, the South London Press have reported that they will now face competition from Manchester United for the 23-year-old defender who has recently made it into Gareth Southgate's England squad.

If there is one area of the pitch Newcastle look a bit light it's at centre-back. Something that has been exposed lately with the injury to Sven Botman. Thankfully, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles have worked well together, easing the burden on Eddie Howe. Another top-class centre-back definitely couldn't go amiss, though, especially for next season.

Marc Guehi, along with his clubmate Joachim Andersen have been earmarked by Newcastle, as well as Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba. All three you'd expect would be out of Newcastle's price range for a January move, however.

The South London Press report suggests that Man United would wait until the summer to make their move, which could be good news for Newcastle as they will have a fresh pot of money to bring in new players in the summer. If Man United were to try and sign him in January, Newcastle may struggle to meet Crystal Palace's demands with it believed that it would take more than £50million to lure him away from South London.

No doubt Guehi would be a fantastic addition to Newcastle's squad. He seems to be growing in stature each game he plays, and alongside Sven Botman, who is a similar age, they could grow together to become a phenomenal defensive partnership.
