It's transfer deadline day and while Newcastle United haven't really taken part in this particular circus for a long time today should be different.

Newcastle have not improved their first team squad this summer and, despite reports suggesting otherwise, still remain at the table for Marc Guehi despite Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish flicking his bitch switch to 11.

It might sound like an exaggeration to say that if Newcastle don't get any players over the line today that's the season ruined, but the reality is, we will struggle. At least until January - although if they found it tough to get players in during the summer window, then January is going to really test them.

Eddie Howe meanwhile has had to face the media this morning in his pre-match press conference knowing full well that the focus is going to be on transfers despite him reiterating many times that he's not involved in that process, he's the one who has to face the questions.

Howe suggests that something could still be done today

Of course, he was asked immediately if there'd be any more signings today and initially, the gaffer offered some hope (via The Chronicle).

"I don't know. Currently there is still time and there is still work going on to try and see what we can do in the last few hours of the window. So while there's time is hope."

However, he then went on to quash that hope with his next answer.

Eddie Howe blames PSR for Newcastle's tough summer

Eddie cited PSR as the main reason why Newcastle are finding things difficult.

"With such a short time left, it is looking difficult. This window continues to be difficult for us. It’s a difficult situation with PSR & attracting the right players we think can make a difference.

"If we can’t do that, then doing nothing is perhaps the best option, as frustrating as that is. There is a feeling that we have a good squad, but a feeling there are a few areas we felt we needed to strengthen."

PSR has nothing to do with Steve Parish playing games over Marc Guehi, but it is what it is. We are bracing ourselves for absolutely nothing today.
