England lost 1-0 at home to Iceland on Friday night as they played out their final warm-up game before Euro 2024 gets underway in a week's time.

The Three Lions were a goal down after 12 minutes and that's how it remained as Gareth Southgate's much-changed England side put in another dismal display to match the one on Monday night at St James' Park, except this time they weren't able to grind out a result.

If this is what we've got to look forward to in Germany, then England will be fortunate to get out of the Group stages.

One bright spot in last night's performance was Newcastle United duo Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon linking up down the left with the latter probably the best player on the park in the first half.

Gordon is not worried despite shock defeat

Anthony Gordon is backing England to get it right when it matters

The Newcastle winger linked up brilliantly with Cole Palmer but the final ball was always lacking regardless of which of the two would end up firing it into the area.

After the game Gordon was asked if fans should be worried for England after that performance but the 23-year-old was adamant that things will come together he told Radio 5 Live (via The Independent).

“No, definitely not worried.

“Good players make it click, good players make it happen. We need time to train together and in a tournament that will happen.

“We’re always going to work. We’re always going to prepare as much as we can.

“I think we’ve got enough players, enough camaraderie around the group, we are very together.

“I think that helps in tournaments. Like I said before, good players make it happen. Good players make magic, and that is what we’ll do.”

Southgate has survived because his team always turns up for tournaments

In fairness, Southgate's England always tends to come alive in tournaments, so Gordon does have a point.

Whether the directive from Southgate is just to take it easy in friendlies or what, we don't know, but there does always seem to be a complete lack of effort when there are no stakes involved.

Fingers crossed that another week of training and an actually incentive should be enough to see the lads turn it up a level when they get their tournament underway a week on Sunday against Serbia.
