As far as results go in football it's often unkind to say a team has been lucky, they just took their chances, but luck played a huge part in Newcastle United's draw against Bournemouth yesterday.
Newcastle took a point away from the Vitality Stadium but in reality should probably have come away with no points and another three-match suspension for one of their players.
On the opening weekend, Fabian Schar got sent off when many people felt a yellow card would have sufficed, and this weekend Joelinton got a yellow card when many feel he should have been sent off.
As far as Newcastle are concerned you could say that it balances out, but in reality, the Magpies were very lucky to finish with 11 men on the pitch on Sunday, and just as lucky not to have lost 2-1 after VAR ruled out their stoppage time goal for handball.
Shortly after Bournemouth's second goal was chalked off, incorrectly in my view, Joelinton took it upon himself to clothesline Bournemouth goalkeeper, Neto, to prevent a quick breakaway.
Players often try and block 'keepers from making quick passes from the back to start a rapid counter-attack, but Joelinton's actions wouldn't have been out of place in the WWE. We're unsure how he got away without being given his marching orders, but a yellow card was all he received.
Meanwhile, a member of Bournemouth's coaching staff was shown a red for protesting.
Speaking to the media after the game (via Newcastle World) Eddie Howe has said he'll have words with Joelinton about the incident.
"It was probably as bit reckless from Joelinton. You could see what he is trying to do - he's trying to stop the keeper - but you can't go near the head area. That's something we will talk to him about."
It wasn't Joey's best game for Newcastle and it was probably done more out of frustration than it being anything malicious, but he definitely got away with one.
