Today is Transfer Deadline Day, and there's still a chance that Newcastle United might do some business. We are truly in the Upside Down.

Transfer Deadline Day used to be an event for football fans up and down the country. Watching Sky Sports News relentlessly with Jim White in his yellow tie shouting as if he wasn't mic'd up, Stoke City fans gathered around the reporter like chimps on a tree, wielding various objects liberated from their mothers' bedside tables.

The drama and excitement would go on right up until the window slammed shut and then for a while after that, those last-minute deals were ratified and reported on. It was worth spending the next day at work yawning your head off.

Now, though, PSR has utterly destroyed the event. Clubs are so reluctant to spend for fear of a points deduction, deals are harder to do and that last-minute, "ah, just do it" attitude to spending is well and truly dead.

There's still time for more business to be done today

For Newcastle United fans it has been a non-event for the past three windows with a clear message being sent well ahead of time that the club would not be doing business on the final day. You could safely go to bed at your usual time safe in the knowledge that you weren't missing out.

Tonight may be a bit different, though. Eddie Howe had been pretty clear when speaking to the press that there'd be no more business once the Miguel Almiron deal is done.

That deal was done a couple of days ago and here we are (it's 10am as I'm writing this) waiting for confirmation of Lloyd Kelly's move to Juventus. So it seems very much that Eddie Howe is removed from the transfer loop and we can't take what he says as gospel.

Newcastle fans can watch Deadline Day unfold with a modicum of hope

After seeing Miggy and Kelly go, there are also still whispers of a late departure for Kieran Trippier - although we suspect that one won't happen.

Having let two first-team squad members go, can Newcastle now bring someone in on the final day? It's probably a fanciful thought, but it does give us some of that good old hope that makes Transfer Deadline Day interesting.

Letting two first-teamers go from a threadbare squad and not bringing anybody else in is a huge risk, but hopefully, a calculated one if that's going to be the case. We absolutely must be active in the summer. Very active.

It's not just about having the right cover in the squad now, it's about showing the likes of Alexander Isak that we still mean business and have ambition. Tonight might be worth keeping an eye on for an unexpected loan arrival, just for the sake of having a vested interest in the Deadline Day shenanigans, but summer is going to be the big test.
